For patients at risk, or for those who show symptoms of a prostate condition, the Plano, TX, family doctors at Village Health Partners can provide a PSA test to screen for prostate cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer is cancer that forms in the tissue of the prostate. Prostates are glands in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum that produce the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Each year in the U.S., approximately 239,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. A prostate cancer test, commonly referred to as a prostate exam, looks for abnormalities in the prostate and treats them if they are found. It is recommended that men over the age of 40 receive this exam annually even if they have no family history of prostate cancer.
"Dr. Gothard and the entire staff at Village Health are wonderful. I have been a patient for over 5 years and Dr. G is caring, professional and thorough. I always feel I have his full attention. I have never had a problem with making appointments or in urgent situations getting Dr. G or one of his staff to promptly follow up, including when I send messages via the Patient Portal. I highly recommend Dr. Gothard and Village Health."- J.M. / Healthgrades / Feb 10, 2021
"I have been long time patient at Village Health (the one on Independence). Once my doc announced she was leaving, I decided to find new one at the VH location closer to home and that is how i came to see Dr Moon. Just had my second visit with him and I have to say i am very impressed with him and my care so far. I think i finally found a doctor who is interested in helping me improve, not just manage my health! Nice to see doctor who looks in you in the eye and not just behind the laptop taking notes!"- J.K. / Google / Feb 08, 2021
"I am a first time patient for Dr. John Moon and I will say this I was definitely indeed impressed by his expertise and after about 5 minutes of meeting him I knew I made the right choice selecting him as my health physician. One of the problems I came in there to see him for he immediately already had a general idea of what it was as soon as I started describing it to him. If you need a new health physician I highly recommend Dr. John Moon. I am proud to have him as my health physician. Thank you Dr. Moon, see you at the next appointment"- L.C. / Google / Feb 02, 2021
"Used to give this office 5 stars and have been going here for years. Still some great docs but many (such as dr Nguy) value $ over patient care. Truly a shame. Asked office to make billing issue right- never heard back. Too bad as they have a few great doctors."- F.D. / Google / Feb 02, 2021
"Many Doctors there are great but way office is run is not. Had an erroneous $60 charge and was told office manager would call me, she never did. Shame to see a great practice go down hill."- D.W. / Yelp / Feb 02, 2021
About the Procedure
Prostate examinations are extremely common, however, most males are apprehensive about undergoing testing. This exam is a very simple exam and helps to catch abnormalities or even cancer at their early stages if given annually. The prostate exam is a rectal exam that is done in males over 40 years of age. During a DRE, digital rectal exam, your doctor will insert a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum to examine your prostate -- which is adjacent to the rectum. If your doctor finds any abnormalities in the texture, shape or size of your prostate gland, you may need more tests, such as a PSA test. The PSA, prostate-specific antigen, is a blood test that can also be used, but the accuracy of the PSA is questionable. Patients should discuss the pros and cons of this blood test with their physician to decide if it should be ordered.

Additional testing may be required in patients who had abnormal findings during their examination. These tests may require more invasive procedures to determine the extent of the abnormality. Should prostate cancer be detected, there are a number of other tests and treatment options the patients will need to discuss with their physician. Depending on each situation, the most common treatment options include: expectant management, surgery, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, vaccine treatment and bone-directed treatment.
