If you have a wart on the surface of your skin, and at-home remedies are not treating it effectively, the family doctors at Village Health Partners in Plano, TX, can remove this common skin condition and provide further treatment so that it does not return. While it may seem harmless when a skin wart appears, it’s actually an infection on the top layer of skin. The virus that causes a wart to form comes from the human papillomavirus, or HPV family. Usually, the virus invades the outer layer of skin through a tiny scratch or irritation, which results in a wart. It’s important to note that warts on the skin, such as on the fingers or feet, and warts on the genitals, are removed in different ways. Often, warts disappear on their own, but it may take up to many months or even years. Some warts won’t go away on their own and will need to be removed by a doctor.

Depending on the type of wart, there are various ways to remove the virus. Warts on the hands, feet or knees can be treated with salicylic acid. The chemicals in the acid will work better if it’s applied on damp skin. Your physician may also use cantharidin on your warts. The doctor will put the chemical on your wart, which will result in blistering between 3 - 8 hours. The bandage can be removed after 24 hours and when you see your doctor again they will remove the dead skin. Some warts may need to be shaved or surgically removed, which involves excising the wart and some of the tissue underneath and around the infected area.

For stronger strains of HPV, a physician can apply liquid nitrogen to the wart. This treatment is called cryotherapy and completely removes the wart. The treatments may be needed every 1 - 3 weeks depending on the level of severity. A physician can also remove warts by burning targeted areas of the skin. A laser cuts out the wart and removes it completely. However, this process is normally reserved for warts that haven’t cleared up with other treatments.
